Engineers dilemma

February 16 2018

I joined the listserve in April, 2014 and this is my first time being selected. As for details, i'm almost 32 and am an Electrical Engineer, married, 3 wonderful children.

I'm at a weird place in life at the moment. When I was young I set goals that I thought would take forever to achieve and unfortunately, have achieved them all. Now I am in search of new goals but really have no idea what to hunt for, I am interested in so many things I find it hard to focus and be passionate about one. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my work, family, and life very much but I want to be a part of something bigger. As an engineer I don't have those detail oriented qualities for design work but excel at troubleshooting and emergency situations which has lead to a wide breadth of knowledge but nothing specific or detailed enough to really be what I would consider, an expert at any one thing. I don't know why but I want to feel like an expert. Its one of the great things about engineering, sometimes you do feel that way..then you'll meet someone who knows more and its like you just started school again. That sense of wonder returns.

I have been looking for ways to share my experience as an engineer in a meaningful way that is larger than my community but because I enjoy my work and family I am limited to nights and weekends type work. I guess I just want to be more involved as to fulfill that passion i'm looking for.

I'm running out of time so i'll cut this short, if you know of anything similar to engineers without borders or the such that give engineers or simply technical people an ability to help the greater cause I would love to have feedback on that to see if I can't find something that works for me.

Never stop learning and listening, its amazing how much you can grow when you think you've hit a wall.
