A Message to Today's Listserve Winner

April 08 2017

Hey Listserve winner,

Yes, you.

Hi. It’s nice to meet you, too.

Listen, I’m just going get to the point.

Every Listserve winner always writes a message to everyone else on the list.

But today, my message is just for you.

I want to ask you to try an experiment with me.

I will write one word that you can copy and paste to the end of your message submission. You can either ADD ONE more word or CHANGE ONE word. And ask the next winner to do the same. Together, we’ll create a sort of Listserve Exquisite Corpse.

The Listserve is an interesting experiment that ties 21,000 complete strangers—who otherwise may have very little in common—together in a shared experience. I want to connect all of us just a little bit more, even if it’s just with a small thread.

Only one person gets to send a message a day, so two Listserve winners a year apart have very little connection to each other.

With this Listserve Exquisite Corpse chain, each new winner can still say whatever they’d like, but in the end, each person can leave a small mark to be carried on from person-to-person in the chain forever. No longer will the Listserve just simply be one person writing a message to everyone, but instead, over time, we’ll collectively write a message to everyone on the Listserve together.

Individually, we can all say something. But together, we can say something more.

(P.S. For those who didn’t catch the reference, this is very much inspired by Reddit’s recent 2017 April’s Fool experiment. Do yourself a favor and look it up.)
