AFTER THE ROCK

March 23 2017

There is nothing I can write which someone else in this wonderful group has not
already written better. Love, Kindness, Empathy, all the paramount things have been covered.

I can, however, recommend some bands in the Post-rock subgenre. Their music made me a better person.

In no particular order:

1. Sigur Ros -- If you only give one band mentioned a chance (you should listen to all of them though) this is the one. Words cannot describe the excellence. You might have heard them in the soundtracks of movies/tv, because productions like to use this genre.

2. Explosions in The Sky -- If you ever watched Friday Night Lights (the movie or tv-show) you have heard this band.

3. Mono

4. Envy -- while technically in the post-rock genre, this is more of a post-hardcore band with heart.

5. Helios

6. Hammock

Bands so obvious for the genre that I forgot them: Godspeed You! Black Emperor (You have heard these guys in the movie 28 Days Later), A Silver Mt Zion, Mogwai, Yndi Halda, 65daysofstatic, The Album Leaf, The Appleseed Cast (not their earlier stuff, while also brilliant, it would not fit here) Do Make Say Think, This Will Destroy You, The Evpatoria Report, Laura, Pg.Lost, *Shels.

I cannot write something like this without mentioning the band VNV Nation. While not being post-rock, they make music so great it defies labeling.

Hopefully this was of interest to someone. It is the kind of list I would have liked when I started getting in to "alternative" music. I was extremely tired when writing this, figured Listserve deserved a response.

PS: Watch "Arrival". It restored my faith in humankind during a horrible week of world events. Jóhann Jóhannsson did the music, a composer very worth mentioning for this genre.
